and the vengeance that she and her brother Orestes take on their mother Clytemnestra and step father Aegisthus for the murder of their father, Agamemnon.

When Agamemnon bathes, Clytemnestra responds by entangling him in a cloth net and stabbing him. After murdering Agamemnon, Clytemnestra marries Aegisthus. Aegisthus becomes King of Mycenae. Clytemnestra then disowns her children - Electra and Orestes are thrown out of Mycenae, Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus plotted the death of Agamemnon, carried it out and took over the throne of Mycenae, demoting Electra and her siblings of their royal status. Electra wishes for her brother Orestes, who was sent away as a very young child, to return and help her avenge her father and dethrone her mother and her lover.

Aegisthus saw his father Thyestes betrayed by Agamemnon's father Atreus (Aegisthus was conceived specifically to take revenge on that branch of the family). Clytemnestra, likewise, is portrayed as wicked because she violates her vows to Agamemnon by taking a lover in his absence. In this version, Aegisthus, as a man, is the driving force behind the story and behind Agamemnon’s death. Clytemnestra plays only a passive role, permitting herself to be seduced, and permitting her husband to be murdered. Aegisthus, Clytemnestra's lover, appears for the first time and is accompanied by his bodyguards.

Clytemnestra was enraged by Iphigenia's murder (and presumably the earlier murder of her first husband by Agamemnon, and her subsequent rape and forced marriage). Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra of Mycenae. After Agamemnon returns from the Trojan War, his wife and his cousin Aegisthus kills him. Electra, his sister smuggles Orestes away to their father's old friend King Strophius of Phocis at the time of Agamemnon's murder. Strophius raises Orestes with his son Pylades, they become close friends.
